This 'livre de souvenir' was published to celebrate the life and work of poet René Crevel, who joined André Breton's Surrealist movement in 1921, was expelled in 1923 and rejoined again in 1928. Crevel was both a surrealist and an ardent communist, with a conflicted personality, and committed suicide shortly after the first meeting of the International Congress of Writers for the Defense of Culture held by the Communist Party in Paris, 1935. He and Breton had failed to bring Surrealism and Communism together at the Congress.

A poem or short piece by Crevel, written 1924-1934, accompanies each of the 14 engravings in this work, finely printed on Rives paper.
