BATIM =ENTS CHINOIS

BATIM / =ENTS /CHINOIS

Chambers, born in Sweden to a Scottish merchant father, was in the employ of the Swedish East India Co. 1740-1749 and made three voyages to China, studying architecture and decoration, and making drawings, mostly around Canton. He became a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1766, and in London was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. It is easily understood how Chambers' Swedish connections and his renown as an architect would bring his "Dessins…Chinois" to the attention of Empress Catherine II, with her own interest in architecture and Russia's trade ties with China, and that a copy of his book should be acquired for the Imperial Library. Only four years before its publication in 1757 she had commissioned "Plan de la ville de Saint-Petersbourg" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of that city, published by the Imperial Academy of Sciences & Art in a large folio with Mikhail Makhaev's 21 monumental engravings of St. Petersburg's Italian and Russian designed buildings. It was Makhaev who, in 1769-1771 engraved the 32 views of Russia's early 18th century advance from St. Petersburg to China and their trade mart at Kyakhta.              Cordier 1570. Lust 1123, 1124. Lowendahl 487 [French text only].
