Founded in 1947 by Luis Bardón López (1897-1964), Librería Bardón is a must for collectors of antique and rare books in Madrid, Spain. It is located at Plaza de San Martín, next to the “Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales”, and since its beginnings it has been called “Bookstore for bibliophiles”. Nowadays, it is the antiquarian bookshop of reference in Spain, and their purpose has remained unchanged throughout these 73 years: to find, keep and sell fine, rare, out-of-print books from XIV to XIX century. Currently they have about fifty thousand books, most of them distributed throughout the original shelves, covering every wall of the shop. Their specialty are early editions, from “incunabula” up to the XVIII century.
Book collecting is an extended passion that takes place in every corner of the planet, although not as prominent as other artistic expressions. Books have been far removed from this genre and rarely considered as artwork, but they are certainly transmission tools of culture and wisdom. Since the appearance of papyrus rolls in ancient Egypt, the Sumerian tablets, the Chinese printing press or the early manuscripts on vellum, to the invention of letterpress printing in Mainz by Johann Gutenberg, until today, a substantial amount of the world heritage has been destroyed by looting, wars, exoduses and deployment. Books that managed to survive are now coveted by bibliophiles.
Bibliophilia is “the love of books, especially those that are the rare". This hobby is at some point converted into such a passion, that it ends up turning into an illness. And there is no cure!
If you feel like traveling in time, and immersing yourself in this amazing bookstore, do not hesitate to visit Librería Bardón. And if you are an antique book collector, Belén and Alicia Bardón, the founder’s granddaughters, will help you with everything you need.
